New ways of working, have been sweeping the world ... so says Steve Denning in 'The Age of Agile'.
Organisations of all sorts are looking more closely at their 'ways of working', how they do things.
Many of the ways we do things are based on working practices from an earlier time, potentially when we first learnt about work and how to work.
Old ways of doing things result in problems and challenges like burnout, overload, overwhelm, rework and wasteful work.
Better ways of working help us learn, explore and adapt to changes, adopt new systems and processes and find more efficient and productive ways to think about work and do the work.
Many people find better ways of working are refreshing, a pleasant change and an inspiring alternative to older ways of doing things.
Better ways give us a fresh lens to look at old tasks and evoke new ways of thinking about the systems and processes we might have been following for years. Plus, better ways of working fire up our innovative and creative mindset; once we start working in better ways, we can't help but keep seeing better ways to do a whole range of tasks and activities!
There are elements of these better, clever, productive and effective techniques that are worth learning about, to see how they can be applied and leveraged across all parts of your school.
Lynne Cazaly is offering
Better Ways of Working
specifically for schools
Better Ways of Working for schools is a 7-session professional learning program for teachers, administrators, leaders, coordinators and other roles across the school community.
Why learn Better Ways of Working?
With burnout at record levels, better ways of working help
- relieve pressures
- identify efficiencies
- eliminate waste, overwork and rework,
and
- uncover clever hacks and shortcuts that make work more modern.
Better Ways of Working are not all about technology and applications. In fact, many better ways of working don’t rely on or need technology, apps or systems.
They are based on
- the mindsets we have
- the behaviours we adopt
- the tasks we choose
- the processes we follow
- the actions we take
and
- the tools we use.
Better Ways of Working are methods that have been adopted by thousands of businesses and don’t require difficult training, big investments or long lead times to learn.
They are clever, contemporary methods that can be put in to practice right away. Perhaps best of all, they help us accelerate our progress; one of the greatest motivators for humans!

The 7 Better Ways of Working Learning Sessions
SESSION 1. The What and Why of BWOW: What are Better Ways of Working and why are they being adopted?
Why are organisations the world over focusing on changing and evolving their ways of working? What are the changes they're making, the gains they're achieving and the benefits they're reaping? Understand the shift to new and better ways of doing things and how all aspects of a school's functioning can be looked at through the 'BWOW' lens.
SESSION 2. Personal Effectiveness
The world’s most successful, popular and effective personal productivity techniques are clever, fresh and creative. Some of them will surprise you! How many of them do you use?
SESSION 3. Cognitive Load Coping and Handling Information Overload
Information overload is a common, daily occurrence. How can we work with information – and our brain – to relieve the pressure and understand better? Learn about what we do that contributes to poor cognitive load coping, and the skills, tools and techniques to handle information like never before.
SESSION 4. The Problem with Perfectionism ... and what's an alternative way of working
Too often we pursue perfect and unreasonably and undefined high standards. Science, research and experience show we need to go for ‘good enough’ instead by using clever incremental and iterative strategies that are a fundamental part of new and better ways of working.
SESSION 5. Creativity and Resourcefulness
Making the most of what we already have is a capability that saves time, money and energy. But how do we switch on our creativity and resourcefulness when we've been influenced to believe the 'more is better' philosophy? Generate ideas, tap clever solutions, and understand hacks, shortcuts and smart cuts that make a significant difference.
SESSION 6. Sensemaking and Visualisation
Gather information faster, connect the dots sooner, learn and decide more effectively. Use these clever and powerful thinking and collaboration tools to cope with complexity and uncertainty.
SESSION 7. Modern Work and the Power of Synchronous and Asynchronous
Contemporary leaders know how to stop defaulting to sync work – everyone in a meeting, now – and shifting to async work using tools, technology and methods that save time and improve productivity. Some work can easily be done asynchronously; which tasks suit it best?
