Connecting deeper ... remotely

In these hybrid times when people may be here, there and anywhere, there’s a danger we miss the good quality, deep connections.

Not the login type of connection - nor the break the ice chit-chat connection.

But rather, the deeper ability to engage with people, to bring warmth, humanity and empathy to an online call with a remote team.

To say ‘it’s not the same as face to face’ or ‘it’s hard to read cues and body language’ is to try to use the same techniques.

But you may have to do something different. Many things different.

How can you better connect with your team no matter where they are?

Many days of each week I’m working with a brand new team, a new group of people I’ve not met before. Swift and deep connection with them is a priority.

We’ve got to be able to get close online, to trust and build engagement so we can achieve what needs to be achieved.

And quickly.

Consider how you’ll make connections with your team, group or meeting participants.

Every time.

Don’t leave it to chance.
Or think it’s not important.
Or that you’re already well enough connected.

How deeply you can connect with people affects everything else that follows.

Focused on the technology or the humanity

As we adapt to leading and working in some new and different ways, don’t lose sight that we are still leading and working with humans, people.

We might be learning new apps, systems and tools and discovering which button does what, or what the best features of the app are, but remember there are people there, wanting to connect and contribute.

Focus on the people. And allow time for it. Ask them questions. Seek their responses. Gain their participation and contribution. Validate their views and opinions.

Yes, the apps and tech may be new to us, and we may be distracted by these bright shiny objects, trying to learn them and be (perfectly) proficient with them. And yes, maybe we need the tech to help us do the task or job better ... you know, perfectly.

But the human connections you make with the other humans matter more than pursuing the perfect tech. Remember to ... Focus on the people. Look at their faces. Listen to their suggestions. Ask them more about their thoughts. See more of our humanity.

You are a leader. Prove it.

There are a lot of announcements going on at this time of year in business – reshaping, reshifting, rearranging, budgets cut, departments changing and roles shifting.

But there always will. No matter the time of year.

There will always be things that leaders need to say. Not just write it in an email, hit send and hide. But say it, speak it, announce it and deliver it.

Here is an announcement for leaders: Stop the Spin.

Stop the waffle-laden, couched-in-uncertain words and riddled-with-vague-descriptions announcements. Stop it. They’re not listening and they don’t believe you.

Stop the spin.

Stop the ‘we’d better say it like this or else….’.

Stop the ‘hush hush’ meetings where you’re supposedly ‘framing’ or ‘positioning’ information before you say it.

Admit it. You are spinning.

After my previous career in communications and public relations I know a good spin when I see it or hear it.

Leadership communications –  announcing good news and bad - needs three key things:

Humanity.

It comes first. You’re dealing with people. Not ‘resources’, numbers, EFTs or heads.

Clarity.

You’re confusing people with your long-winded sentences, waffly phrases and ‘I can’t quite say it how I want to say it’ speeches, riddled with workplace catch phrases that send minds into orbit and off topic.

Get clear. What is the message? In normal speak. Say it like that.

Elegance.

This is different to spin. It means something has style and good taste. It is concise. Take your normal speak message and give it some elegance.

You are a leader. You are a communicator.

Prove it.

Every time you open your mouth. Speak like a leader.

  1. Show humanity first.
  2. Be clear with your message.
  3. Present it elegantly, concisely and with style.

Delete waffle, long sentences, boring phrases and work-speak.

Be original. Be unique.

Everything about a leader speaks, especially when they speak.
